Plant Shelfie Bookends PRE-ORDER
This is a pre-order. Only 25 pairs will be available to order and they will ship by mid-February the latest (hopefully sooner).
Need more space for your plants? How about some truly functional planters?
These were originally made from a 6” planter with attached saucer that’s thrown on the potter’s wheel. I then cut the planter in half, attach a slab back to each half, and voila- Bookends! When I decided to move to Portugal I partnered with Mudshark Studios to have molds of my bookends made, so I can keep making them for you from afar. This is the first batch of slip cast bookends available, and I’m so excited about them! One small change we made for the first order, these will not have the wire on the back to hang them. I hope to add this feature again in the future, but the hooks were causing some issues with production, so I decided not to include them while we troubleshoot that.
How They’re Made
Mudshark made a 3 part plaster casting of one of my original designs. Slip (liquid clay) is poured into the molds and sits for 20+ minutes (depending on the humidity and desired thickness). The extra slip is poured out, which leaves the shell of the bookends inside the mold. One of the potters at Mudshark removes the bookend from the mold, cuts the spare (this is the pour spout), and cleans the seam lines by hand. They also smooth all the edges, add my WTW stamp, and set them flat to dry. They are then bisque fired, and Anna picks them up to glaze in my Portland studio, before she lovingly packs them up and ships them to you.
So, while I am not throwing them on the wheel, they are still handmade in my hometown of Portland, OR. My favorite part is that this little creation of mine is now making work for other ceramic artists, so by purchasing my bookends you’re not only supporting my small business, but, helping other artists do what they love too!
This is a good place to mention that these are not perfect. But, hey! It’s handmade, so imperfections remind us that it’s made by real humans.
Each half has a drainage hole and is heavy enough to hold your books up for the ultimate plant shelfie.
Choose glaze options from the drop down menu. The first picture represents the new look of the bookends (It’s slightly different), the other images are just to demonstrate color options.
